Today marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter, a cornerstone of global peace, justice, and human rights. The United Nations Charter is more needed than ever; it is a living testament to what humanity can achieve when we choose cooperation over division.

“On this significant date, we reaffirm the European Parliament's unwavering commitment to the principles and values enshrined in this foundational document: democracy, peace and security, multilateralism, solidarity, human rights and the rule of law.

“The UN Charter has been a foundation of international relations, promoting peace, security and cooperation among nations, and inspiring generations to work towards a more just and equitable world. The United Nations, born from the devastation of World War II, has prevented large-scale conflicts, protected vulnerable populations, and advanced universal human rights. From the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the Sustainable Development Goals, multiple disarmament agreements, peacekeeping missions, the "Women, Peace and Security" agenda, the protection of civilians, and the Paris Agreement on climate change, the UN has provided a framework for cooperation that has lifted millions out of poverty, preserved peace, and safeguarded the dignity and quality of life of all people.

Today, the world faces unprecedented challenges – the erosion of human rights and democratic values, inequality, climate change and conflicts of all kinds threaten the progress we have made. Yet these challenges also demand renewed unity. It is only through multilateral cooperation that we stand a chance of overcoming those challenges. We therefore remain convinced that the United Nations continues to be an indispensable instrument for addressing the complex and interconnected problems of our time.

“As we look to the future, we recognise the need for the UN to evolve, address systemic issues and adapt to new realities. The UN must become more inclusive, effective, transparent, and accountable, ensuring that the voices and concerns of all countries and peoples are heard and taken into account. We believe that the EU should play a leading role in strengthening dialogue, cooperation and partnerships. Let us build on the UN’s legacy to address today’s challenges with courage and innovation.”
